Bauhaus Museum Dessau Competition
Competition organization: Foundation Bauhaus Dessau
Year: 2015
Project: Mattia Darò

1. urban strategies
The museum refers particularly to the park more than the city. The main facade overlooks the garden and not the fronts of the streets buildings, so as to bring the access museum’s flows inside the park. On the ground floor of the building is reduced to 4 blocks to allow the horizontal cross of the park area. The whole project area has been redesigned in order to be a great urban space paved, pertaining to the museum, in total contrast with the current design of the park.
The area has equipped:
-a hub for vehicles, on Friedrichstrasse, where there are access to the parking building and a way for service vehicles for the logistic of the museum (loading and unloading).
-3 areas pertaining to the museum, identified between the four building blocks: an area for access to the private areas of the museum; an area dedicated to the cafeteria; an area (with a ephemeral structure as porch) dedicated to the entrance’s museum.
-the “park museum piazza”: a large area that continues the design of the museum on the ground and stands out in the intensity of the appeals from the wider, at whose end is the fountain “Stadtgespräch”; it is the main place for all outdoor activities of the museum (as education or events activities).
the filter of “open rooms”: this acts as a filter between the paved area and the garden area of the existing park. His name is given by a series of walls (h. 2m) that define the sub areas with different functions (the replacement of victims of fascism memorial, several areas for parking of bicycles, tennis sports, a bowling green , children’s play area, seating area, an area of the flowers).
The small building Parking is 2.5m tall and looks like a small hill, with a green roof where even the trees are relocated.
Regarding the trees the intention is to preserve them all with the shift of a few (about 20) that affect the area of the museum and the repositioning of those concerning the coverage of the building’s parking lot.
The road system is confirmed with the exception of the access of vehicles on Friedrichstrasse mentioned before.

2. program of the building
The design of the shape of the building is based on the optimization of the program of the museum and its services. The four blocks on the ground, that are also the big supports of the building, accommodate definite functions and they works autonomously:
– Block 1 serves as the entrance to the museum, home to a great mobile platform that takes visitors to the floor of the museum (+ 10m).
– Block 2 serves as the museum’s facilities: the information area, the ticket office and the museum shop but also the independent access to space for events that is at the level of the museum.
– Block 3 serves as a café/restaurant and its interior is also obtained a protected terrace to eat outside but it is also the access to the space workshop located at the level of the museum.
– Block 4 is used for all functional areas and service to the museum (the logistics area including storage spaces where there is an elevator up to the exhibition) and office areas of the museum.
The museum is on one floor level (+ 10m). It is defined in three separate areas: two destined to the permanent collection and one for temporary exhibitions.
The internal height of the exhibition rooms is 5.5m.
The space for events and those for workshop activities, as mentioned, work independently, having stairs and elevators dedicated and are located within the exhibition spaces (such a building inside to another building) so that it can be opened also to the exhibition space, if necessary.
The building structure works as a bridge that rests on 4 large blocks that function as large vertical supports which rest the slabs of large exhibition spaces supported by a system of beams (distance 20m h 2m).

3. aesthetic choices
The project design is presented for pure elements and tending to abstraction in contrast to the existing context. The museum building has a monumental appearance through its elemental form and its exemplary geometry:
the shape of the museum is defined by the four vertical blocks that lead to the only large horizontal plane (92x32m), suspended from the ground (+10m), where are located the exhibition areas.
In addition, the facade is entirely marked by a grid that defines a modular step of a coating and has some limited openings: a large on the front side to frame the moving platform that takes visitors to the floor of the museum and a long window across the back facade where the offices are located. The other openings, such as the entrance doors and other service windows, are cut in the grid itself in such a way that the building always keeps its appearance monumental and compact.
